Asgiri Monastery
Asgiri Monastery is one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in Sri Lanka, located in the sacred city of Kandy. Known as part of the two main monastic complexes of the Siyam Nikaya (together with Malwathu Monastery), it plays a central role in the preservation of Buddhist traditions and rituals associated with the Temple of the Tooth Relic.
Nestled on a quiet hilltop overlooking the bustling city of Kandy, Asgiri Monastery is a sacred Buddhist institution with a history dating back centuries. Together with the Malwathu Monastery, it is one of the two chief temples of the Siyam Nikaya order, responsible for conducting important rituals at the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa). The monastery complex features traditional Kandyan architecture, serene surroundings, and a spiritual atmosphere that provides visitors with a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage. It is home to meditation halls, monastic residences, and ancient relics, making it not only a religious center but also a place of cultural significance. Pilgrims and visitors alike are drawn to Asgiri for its tranquil environment, historical value, and close ties to the island’s most revered Buddhist relic.
